SRINAGAR, Dec 23: District Srinagar SnowShoe Association today held its first ever District Srinagar SnowShoe Championship at Mamneth Meadow, Dhara, here.
The championship was held by Association under the auspices of J&K SnowShoe Association with the aim to open the avenues of holding Winter Sports in Srinagar District.
In the event top level young athletes of the District Srinagar participated.
Rafiq Ahmad of Kashmir Harvard finished first while as Mudasir Ahmad Bhat finished second. Hidayat ur Rasheed of Kashmir Harvard bagged third position.
After the event, prize distribution function was held at Nehru Park here in which Director Industries Kashmir and well known adventurer Mahmood Ahmad Shah was chief guest.
Among others present were International Water Sports coach Mir Bilquis, SnowShoe Federation of India official Mushtaq Bashir and Organising Secretary of the event Muzamil Hussain.
Terming the event as good initiative, Mahmood Shah who has explored the area a lot during his trekking expeditions said that there is possibility of holding number of winter sports activities in Srinagar.
“SnowShoe is activity that doesn’t need any infrastructure and can be held even in city centre when there is snow. If there is no snow in city centre we have areas around Dhara, leading to Mahadev peak where it can hold till March and April. Apart from that we can hold ski expeditions in the Mahadev region and even SnowShoe hiking expeditions”, he said.
SnowShoe Federation of India official Mushtaq Bashir said, “Normally winter sports is associated with Gulmarg in Kashmir. But SnowShoe running can be held in any part of the World which receives snowfall. I am happy to see J&K SnowShoe Association doing what no one had thought before. It will open up avenues of holding more such events”.
