GULMARG , Dec 18: The Ski Resort of Gulmarg hostel first Winter Sports event- 8th UT level SnowShoe Championship, was organised today by J&K SnowShoe Association under the auspices of SnowShoe Federation of India and in collaboration with Department of Tourism Kashmir.
In the competition both male and female in senior and junior categories participated along with 260 athletes from all over J&K representing various districts and clubs during the event.
The event was flagged off by president J&K SnowShoe Association Tariq Ahmad Zargar and Principal DPS Budgam.
At the prize distribution ceremony, vice president World SnowShoe Federation (WSSF) Mir Muddasir was the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners.
Muddasir said that the Tourism department plays an important role in the development of SnowShoe sports in J&K. “SnowShoe is an activity that doesn’t require any special infrastructure and facility. It can be held all over J&K and only needs a few inches of snow. Tourism has been supporting it since the beginning and we are hopeful they will continue that,” he added.
In senior men, Adil Fayaz emerged as winner, while Adil Ahmed bagged 2nd place. Abrar Ahmed bagged 3rd place. In senior women, National gold medallist Sara stood 1st, while Toiba Yousuf and Rutba Altaf bagged 2nd & 3rd places respectively. In junior boys, Faizan Rafique, Shahnawaz and Umar Bashir won top three places respectively and in junior girls, Shaista Mehraj, Madeeha and Arbeena of Budgam bagged first three positions respectively.19
