Fresh protests by students

Srinagar, May 1: Fresh student protests broke out in Pulwama district of South Kashmir during which they boycotted classes and clashed with security forces while classwork in two main Higher Secondary Schools in city remained suspended again today.
Scores of students of Government Boys Higher Secondary School Pulwama boycotted their classes and took out a rally from their educational institute. Amid massive sloganeering, the students sought release of their counterparts detained by police during  recent protests. The students entered into Government Degree College Pulwama where their counterparts joined them in the protest.
Amid heavy sloganeering by scores of students inside Pulwama College, some of them also climbed the rooftop of the College’s Administrative Block and displayed banner size picture of slain militant commander Burhan Wani and a black flag of Islamic State. The students later took out another rally and marched in Main Town of the Pulwama.
According to witnesses, the students resorted to heavy stone-pelting on police and security forces near Pulwama police station. Police responded by lobbing dozens of teargas shells after which clashes between both sides ensued, resulting in disruption of commercial and transport activities for several hours. Due to clashes, the classwork in Pulwama Higher Secondary and College remained suspended yet again.
Peaceful protests were staged by students of Women’s College Maulana Azad Road in city here. Witnesses said that students of the all-women colleges assembled on their campus and protested for an hour against State and also sought release of detained students. They, however, didn’t come out of their College premises and dispersed peacefully.
The classwork today remained suspended in Sri Pratap Higher Secondary School Maulana Azad and MP Higher Secondary School Bagh-e-Dilawar Khan here. But, according to the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, routine class work for 9th and 10th standards shall take place at MP Higher Secondary School from tomorrow.
“However, class work shall remain suspended at SP Higher Secondary School on May 2, 2017(Tuesday) as a precautionary measure,” he said. The classwork in SP Higher Secondary has remained suspended since Tuesday last week – a day after students staged violent protests in city centre against State Government and Police.
