Fresh threats to Panchayat members

Srinagar, Feb 8: After recent killing of a Sarpanch in North Kashmir, fresh threat posters today appeared in a North Kashmir village threatening Panchayat members and asking them to resign or face consequences.
Reports reaching here said that residents found posters pasted on the shops in the morning in village Wadpora in North Kashmir district of Kupwara today.
The handwritten posters sought resignation of the Panchs and Sarpanchs of village Wadpora and adjacent villages and threatened of consequences if they failed to comply.
A Police party of Police Station Chogul Handwara in district Kupwara reached the village and removed the posters and they registered a case and have started investigations.
In the afternoon 47 Rashtriya Rifles of the Army cordoned the village and questioned people about the posters that appeared in the village. They assured Panchs and Sarpanchs of security and asked them not to panic.
It may be mentioned here that Army is conducting night patrolling in the sensitive areas of Kashmir valley where the Panchayat members have been threatened and targeted recently.
Sarpanch Habibullah Mir of Gooripora Bomai in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district was killed last month on January 11 and this was followed by attack on a woman Panch, Zooni Begam, of village Hardshiva in Sopore.
The twin attacks led to panic in the area forcing the Panchayat members to flee from their houses and over 100 Panchayat members resigned.
