DEHRADUN, Nov 12: The flowing water of the Ganga was witnessed again today during its famous Aarti at Har Ki Pauri as the Ganga canal was reopened after its annual 18-day closure for cleaning and maintenance purposes.
500 cusecs of river water was released into the canal today after over a fortnight, an Irrigation Department official here said.
The amount of water to be released into the canal will be increased gradually, he said.
Maintenance activities like cleaning up and repairs of the banks, clearing of supply channels and levelling of Mayapur head base were taken up during the 18-day closure period, he said.
Visitors including celebrities at Har Ki Pauri faced problems due to the closure of the river for over a fortnight.
Actor-politician Raj Babbar had to move from one place to another to immerse his father’s ashes into the river as it was closed.
Former Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank whose wife died here yesterday had to go to Kankhal to immerse her ashes in the river. (PTI)
