GCW Parade organizes lecture

JAMMU, Oct 15: Department of Zoology, GCW, Parade, organized an awareness lecture, on “climate change and insect pest management” by Dr Sanjay Khajuria, a senior scale scientist of SKAUST-Jammu.
The lecture was a part of series of lectures to be organized by the college, under the Star College Scheme.
The speaker in his address, discussed at length about the major factors responsible for the climate change, which according to him include, the population explosion which has resulted in the deforestation, excessive burning of the fossil fuels and varied land use patterns. He also mentioned  various  harmful impacts of the climate change which include melting of glaciers, frequent floods, soil erosion and droughts. He  elaborated  how different insects have attained the pest status due to climate change  as they have recently been found to destroy crops of economic importance which were not previously affected by them.
Yet another lecture, on “Monkeys in Jammu” by Dr Poonam Sambyal, a renowned researcher in the field of Monkeys in Jammu region, was also organized.
The  recourse person in her lecture talked at length about the different aspects of monkeys ranging from their taxonomic position, ecology, feeding, breeding, and daily activity time budget. Besides she also gave a detailed account of various behaviours and interactions including auto-grooming, allogrooming, intra-specific and inter-specific interactions. The most interesting point of the talk was that monkeys perform various yoga exercises comparable to those done by human being.
Principal, GCW, Parade, Dr Hemla Agrawal, in her address appreciated the speakers for giving valuable information to the students, and also sought  help in getting rid of the monkey menace in the college.
