GDC Akhnoor, GDC Mendhar trounce rivals, sail into next stage of Cricket

*GDC Hiranagar wins inaugural tie of Hockey

JAMMU, Oct 29: Government Degree College (GDC) Akhnoor and GDC Mendhar trounced their rivals in their respective matches and sailed into the next stage of the ongoing Inter-Collegiate Cricket Championship, being organized by Department of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu at varsity ground, here today.
In the first match, GDC Akhnoor smashed GDC Basholi by 5 wickets and registered berth in the next round.
Batting first after winning the toss, GDC Basholo made 105 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. Rahul, Sukinder and Sohail made 29, 22 and 18 runs respectively.
For GDC Akhnoor side, Koushal and Sumit scalped 2 wickets each, while Ritik took one wicket.
In reply, GDC Akhnoor chased the target in 16.2 overs by losing 5 wickets. Rohan was the top scorer with 30 runs, while Akhlesh and Robin chipped in 19 and 15 runs respectively.
For GDC Basholi, Sohail took 3 wickets, while Imran scalped 2 wickets.
In the second match, GDC Mendhar registered win over GDC Thanna Mandi by 8 wickets and registered berth in the next stage.
Electing to bat first after winning the toss, GDC Thanna Mandi scored paltry 70 runs by losing all the wickets in 13.2 overs. Shaid and Aamir made 9 runs each, while Asif scored 8 runs.
For GDC Mendhar, Dilshad scalped 4 wickets, while Sohail took 3 wickets. Sharaz also pocketed one wicket.
In the second inning, GDC Mendhar chased the target easily in just 6 overs by losing 2 wickets. Shakeel played a magnificent inning of 47 runs, while Sharaz and Aejaz chipped in 12 and 6 runs respectively.
For GDC Thanna Mandi, Arshad scalped one wicket.
The matches were officiated by Vijay Kumar, Amandeep Singh, Sadiq Hussain Malik, Opinder Singh and Raj Kumar Bakshi, while the scorecard was maintained by Rahul Kumar.
Meanwhile, Inter Collegiate Hockey Championship for men and women started today. On the occasion, Director Sports and Physical Education Dr Daud Iqbal Baba was the chief guest, who interacted with the players.
The first match was played between Trikuta Degree College and GDC Hiranagar in which latter emerged winner.
It may be mentioned here that there are 14 teams of different Degree Colleges of Jammu Province are participating in this Championship.
The match was officiated by Matinder Pal Singh, Ranveet Singh, Harvinder Pal Singh, D Singh, Jagjit Singh and Joginder Singh.
