GMC Jammu gets license for Corneal Transplant

JAMMU, Jan 10: The Government Medical College, Jammu has got provisional registration from the Licensing Authority of Directorate of Health Services, Jammu under the J&K transplantation of Human Organ Act, 1997.
With this, the upgraded Department of Ophthalmology shall start corneal transplantation very soon.
A large number of patients with corneal blindness are waiting for transplantation and in absence of this facility in GMC, Jammu they had to go outside the State of the same.
This is a follow up action of the initiative of Minister for Health & Medical Education, Bali Bhagat who chaired a meeting in Super Speciality Hospital regarding starting organ transplantation in GMC, Jammu.
He has directed all concerned HoDs to make available all the help required for organ transplantation and has advised them that transplantation programme in his top priority and it is his dream to start organ transplantation including cornea and kidney transplantation in GMC, Jammu.
Principal GMC, Jammu Dr. Sunanda Raina has formed a Committee of concerned HoDs which, will meet on weekly basis to remove the bottlenecks for starting kidney transplant in GMC, Jammu at the earliest.
