JAMMU, May 8: Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College Jammu, in association with Indian Academy of Pediatrics J&K State Branch and J&K Thalassemia Welfare Society (JKTWS), organized a program in connection with World Thalassemia Day, which is observed on 8th May 2024 every year.
Principal & Dean Govt Medical College, Jammu Dr Ashutosh Gupta was the chief guest for this event. He emphasized for screening of general population for Thalassemia carrier status, especially for those who are having mild anemia.
Professor & HoD Pediatrics, GMC Jammu, Dr Ghanshyam Saini apprised the gathering about the facilities being provided in the Thalassemia Day Care Centre in SMGS Hospital, Jammu.
Dr Gaurav Kharya, Clinical Lead, Centre for Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy, Senior Consultant Pediatric Hematology and Oncology & Immunology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals New Delhi, was the guest faculty for this event. He delivered an awareness lecture on management & prevention of Thalassemia and role of Bone Marrow transplantation as a definite cure of Thalassemia. He also conducted a free HLA matching camp for individuals with Thalassemia to find out potential donor for Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) amongst their sibs.
Sudhir Sethi, President, J&K Thalassemia Welfare Society highlighted the achievements of JKTWS in last 28 years. Further he thanked Dr Sanjeev Kumar Digra, Professor Pediatrics and Coordinator Thalassemia Day Care Centre SMGS Hospital, Jammu for his contribution towards the effective medical management and care of Thalassemia patients and for the key role played by him in establishment of a new Thalassemia Day Care Centre at GMC Rajouri.
