SRINAGAR, June 2: Following controversy over the hosting of circus show inside Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar hostel campus for two months, Principal GMC, Dr Rafiq Ahmad Pampori attached Estates Officer accusing him of giving misinformation to get approval from him.
“I was told by my Estates Officer that some organization is hosting Gymnastic and Amusement shows for some short duration to benefit the economically poor people, which was not the case, that is why I have attached him and a house committee has been formed to investigate the matter,” Pampori said.
Pampori also said that the Estates Officer without going deep into the details gave nod for the holding of circus and he just put his signature on the official communication.
But Amit Kumar, Manager Apollo Circus and Amusement said that his group got the permission from the GMC, 18 days prior to the holding of the show and added that the refusal by the authorities has resulted in huge losses to his company.
“I have arranged everything. Already 15 trucks loaded with equipment and animals have arrived in the Valley and we have completed all the formalities before going with the show. We paid tool tax at various places and have roped in some top artists from various countries but refusal from the GMC authorities has left me in lurch and I am left with no option but to go for legal route,” Kumar told Excelsior over phone.
Kumar also said that he has to pay heavy amount to 150-strong troupe including six South African, three Tanzanian and two Russian performers who have reached here to perform in various events as part of the circus.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commi-ssioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Shah said that the district administration gave the permission for law and order issue, not for site to host the event that too only after the nod of GMC authorities. He said that it was for the GMC authorities to decide whether the circus should be allowed to perform in the hostel campus or not.
