JAMMU, Mar 19: With an initiative to conserve energy and make its proper use, the students of GD Goenka Public School started a year long project under the guidance of Mamta Suri, Head of the Department, Arts, here.
The students are being taught that energy must be conserved if we want the future generations to use it. The students gave the message that it was unsafe and illegal to use electricity without proper permission.
They made wonderful objects like hand made bags, tea coasters, paintings, jewellery, mobile cases, etc. in their socially useful and productive work classes. These items were sold on different occasions.
The amount contributed was used to buy solar lanterns. The management and the staff also donated generously for the purpose.
These lanterns were donated to the people falling below poverty line according to the list prepared by the Government officials.
They visited Dub Sodan, a village on the international border and donated these lanterns personally to the needy people.
Sarpanch, Shyam lal Verma was also present on the occasion.
Goenkans were assisted by the Block Development Officer, Marh, Ahmed Tasir in this project.
This project was envisioned by the Principal, Poonam Jha when Jammu was facing severe power cuts during the summer season of 2011, who felt that it was utmost important to save energy and thought students were the best medium as they were the future builders of our society.
