NEW DELHI : Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Governor N N Vohra today called on him here and briefed him about the situation in the state.
During the meeting, which lasted for nearly 30 minutes, the Governor apprised the Prime Minister about various schemes being undertaken in the state as well as the law and order situation, official sources said.
Modi will be visiting the state on November 7 during which he will inaugurate the second phase of Baglihar power project.
The three units of the 450-MW project (Phase-II) would generate 1,302 million units electricity. Its commissioning would raise the state’s generation capacity to over 1,211 MW.
It was not immediately clear whether he would be inaugurating the power project through a remote control from Jammu or Chanderkote or visit the location, the sources said.
The Prime Minister will also visit the Valley where he is scheduled to hold a public rally amid hopes that he would break the ice with Pakistan.
Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has repeatedly said that adverse relations with Pakistan will negatively impact the political and developmental processes in the state.
Sayeed has been quoted in media as saying that the Srinagar rally was an opportunity for the Prime Minister to speak on diversity from country’s only Muslim majority state.
In a related development, Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar has served a notice to pro-Pakistan separatist and Chairman of hardline Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani to refrain from taking out any rally during the Prime Minister’s visit as he proposes to do.
Geelani has been asked to approach district authorities for permission in case he planned to take out any rally. The separatist leader has said he would be holding a public rally parallel to that of the Prime Minister.
As many as 200 people have been rounded up in the Valley by police to prevent any untoward incident during the forthcoming visit of the Prime Minister. (PTI)
