SRINAGAR, Feb 4: Terming the creation of new administrative units across the State an election propaganda and to hide the failures of Government, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), President Mehbooba Mufti said the National Conference (NC) led Government has lost its credibility and it has nothing positive to show the public.
Addressing a press conference at his residence, Mehbooba said: “As the elections approach the discomfort of the Government has become very obvious as it has nothing positive to tell the electorate, so they came up with these new administrative units despite financial crunch.”
The PDP president said like always in its history, the NC looked for easy way out. “The game started with a mock fight between the coalition partners, threats of resignation, hobnobbing with new possible allies and the stage was set for an unprecedented chaos in the sensitive State. Election time has been converted deliberately into a virtual social upheaval, with only elections in mind”, she added.
Mehbooba said the watermarks of this Government have been corruption, lawlessness, nepotism and lack of governance. “A record number of civilian killings at the hands of Government forces, thousands of youth victimized with false cases, dissent criminalized and opposition voices gagged with curbs even on prayers, the Government is clearly on the back foot,” she said, adding people seek answers to their questions on the BOPEE scandal, back door recruitments, sale of jobs, re-employment of the retired officials and the dead wood, subversion of the examination system, erosion of its sanctity and credibility. The list of crimes of this Government is unending and it is in for a rout by all indications”, she added.
The PDP president said the slogan of NC to create administrative units on equitable basis in all the three regions of the State of Jammu and Kashmir has proved hoax and hollow as most of the deserving villages with good population have been dropped even in the previously recommended lists of Mushtaq Ganie and S S Bloria committees.
PDP President also said the committee under both chairpersons made a detailed exercise, met people across the state and made some recommendations in 2011. “Since then the report had been gathering dust and the cabinet had been tossing the issue without taking any decision. Repeated demands were made to table the reports in the state legislature but without any response from the Government,” she added.
Discrimination has always provided the subtext to political discourse in the State. This Government has taken the feeling of discrimination to a new and more dangerous level. Not to speak of inter regional feelings of discrimination it is now percolated down to the village level, she said.
Pointing towards the protest over denial of administrative units, Mehbooba said the Government need to take note of the protests that have spread to every nook and corner of the state. “PDP is apprehensive, if the Government doesn’t respond positively to the demands of the protesting people that may lead to untoward incidents resulting in some sort of tragedy. Therefore, immediate remedial measures should be taken to satisfy the people of those areas that feel left out,” she said.
The PDP chief was flanked by the Rafi Ahmad Mir, MLA Shangus Anantnag and Abdul Haq Khan MLA Lolab during the press conference.
