Govt creating infrastructure for diverse sports activities: Gurezi

SRINAGAR, May 21: Maintaining that Sports is essential for overall development of an individual, the Minister of State for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Nazir Ahmad Gurezi Tuesday said that the Government is playing its role by organizing sports activities in a big way by up upgrading the existing infrastructure needed for holding National and International championships.
Addressing the closing ceremony of 4th National Vovinam Championship 2013, organized by the J&K Vovinam Association under the aegis of Vovinam Association of India, here today, the Minister said that more and more such tournaments need to be organized all across the State particular in rural areas to enhance involvement of youth in diverse sports activities.
The Minister congratulated the Jammu and Kashmir Vovinam Association for conducting the National Championship for the first time in the State.
The Minister said that the Government has earmarked sufficient funds under sports sector and is keen to create and upgrade the existing sports infrastructure for the promotion of sports activities in the State.
As many as 336 players of different categories from 21 States participated in the event. Jammu and Kashmir also participated in the event and won five gold, six silver and four bronzes medals.
The working President and Chairman Technical Committee, Dr. Vishnu Sahani also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of the game.
Later, Gurezi distributed certificates and mementos among the winners and participating players.
