JAMMU, Jan 14: Expressing his concern over the militant attacks on Panchayat members and repeated ceasefire violation on border, the former Union Minister and MLA, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has assailed the UPA as well as State Government for not taking the developments with the required seriousness.
He regretted that the dignity of the country was being put at the stake and a sense of feeling being created that India was a weak nation and a soft country. “This notion is highly injurious for the health and unity of this big country,” he warned.
In a statement, Prof Gupta said that the commanders of the terrorists have been threatening the Panchs and Sarpanchs for resigning for quite some time past but instead of taking upon such elements and telling Pakistan to handover these enemies of the people to India, the Central Government has been sleeping over the matter. Not only this, nothing was done by the State Government to provide security cover to the Panchs and Sarpanchs even in the militancy infected areas, he added.
Prof Gupta also accused the Government of not extending the provision of 73rd Amendment of the Indian Constitution in J&K for empowerment of Panchayats here.
Prof. Gupta recalled that despite opposition by the nationalists the security measures were curtailed even from sensitive areas and slogans for removal of AFSPA were raised by the National Conference.
