Govt school children forced to study in open

POONCH, Feb 28: The students of a Government school at Steellan in Tehsil Mandi are virtually forced to attend classes in the open sky.
The locals claimed that 110 students including boys and girls are studying in this Govt Middle School. It’s all due to the apathy of the district administration Poonch as well as Education Department, that they didn’t take any initiative to ensure construction/ repair the school building even after more than nine years.
Both the girls and boys are worst suffers in this school and moreover the strength of the girls is higher than the boys. During rain and cold conditions the children face hardships. In blazing sun during summers also they are unable to sit in the open. This has affected their studies as the teachers then ask the children to go homes.
Local residents said that despite repeated pleas to the Education Department to renovate the school, nothing has been done so far. The students receive good education in the absence of adequate infrastructure but rain and cold conditions are the major hurdles.
Students of the school said, “We faced severe hardships to continue our studies. We don’t have proper space. How can we concentrate on our studies if we don’t have proper infrastructure.”
Tasadaq Bandey -a teacher of the school, said: “It has been nine years since the roof top of the school building was blown away by strong winds. We face hardships while teaching students. In rainy season we are not able to teach. Now when the mercury has soared, it becomes equally difficult to hold classes under the open sky,” Bandey said.
He said the Head Master had submitted a detailed report about the school, but till date no response has been received from the higher authorities. He said that locals from the area many times met with the Zonal Education Officer Mandi, Chief Education Officer and apprised them of the miserable condition of the school, but response is yet awaited.
