Srinagar, Sept 2: CPI (M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has demanded compensation for the Gujjar-Bakerwal community for their huge losses to livestock suffered in rains which lashed the State, particularly the higher altitudes.
In a statement, Tarigami said it was unfortunate that members of this community were not provided with fabricated sheds, tents in Bhacks so they could protect their livestock from the torrential rains.
The communist leader said the Government has failed to cover this community including its livestock under an insurance cover, especially during the grazing season, so they would be compensated under Agriculture Insurance Scheme.
The CPI (M) leader said that a resolution to grant Tribal Status to Chopan community was passed in the State Legislative Assembly in 2010 but the Centre has not taken any cognizance to this so far.
Tarigami also stressed for pragmatic welfare measures for sheep grazers, Gujjar and Bakerwal communities and urged for eliminating exploitation of middlemen in their activities. He said it was very important to provide this important community a platform in the form of an Advisory Board to address their demands for their upliftment.
