J&K bags Gold in 68th NSG Fencing

JAMMU, Nov 12: The 68th National School Games in Fencing commenced today with a vibrant and colorful opening ceremony at the Gymnasium Hall, University of Jammu. The event was inaugurated by the Minister for Youth Services and Sports, J&K, Satish Sharma. A total of 21 State and UT teams from across the country are participating in the prestigious tournament, organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (YS&S), J&K, under the aegis of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI).
Satish Sharma emphasized that sports should be managed by sportspersons, stressing that only those with a genuine passion for sports should be at the helm of sports associations to ensure better results.
He assured the players and officials that the Government remains committed to promoting genuine sporting talent, while no individual or group would be allowed to politicize the sector. He also extended his gratitude to parents, coaches, and sports teachers for their unwavering support, which plays a critical role in the success of young athletes.
Sarmad Hafeez, Secretary Youth Services and Sports, while addressing the gathering, spoke about the department’s role in nurturing talent at the grassroots level, instilling values such as leadership, discipline, and perseverance among the youth. Rajinder Singh Tara, Director General, YS&S, who spoke about the significance of such events in promoting sports and fostering unity, cultural exchange and brotherhood among children from diverse backgrounds.
Among the dignitaries present at the inauguration were Jatindra Mishra, Deputy Director, Central YS&S and Daud Iqbal Baba, Director Sports at the University of Jammu.
On the opening day, Jammu and Kashmir made an impressive start to the competition by clinching a gold medal in the Under-14 Girls’ Sabre Team event. The victorious team included Eknoor Kour, Shrija Bali, Sabrena Choudhary and Janell Mattoo. The silver medal in the event went to Haryana, while the bronze medals were shared by Punjab and Gujarat.
