JAMMU, Sept 24: Police defused a HE36 hand grenade near a religious place at Khakkal Mohalla in Bhaderwah town of Doda district in early hours of this morning, thus, averting what could have been a major tragedy.
Police, CRPF and local people spotted a hand grenade lying near the religious place at Khakkal Mohalla at 3.30 am today.
Police parties led by SHO Bhaderwah Inspector Gurmeet Singh rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. A Bomb Disposal Squad was called to the spot, which shifted the grenade to an isolated area and defused it safely.
Police conducted searches in the area after recovery of the grenade. However, no arrests were made from the spot. The searches continued.
Timely recovery of the grenade has averted a major tragedy, sources said. They didn’t rule out the possibility of the grenade having been planted by the anti-national elements in the area to fan communal trouble in Bhaderwah.
