SRINAGAR, Aug 23: The Jammu and Kashmir Rural Development Society (JKRDS) on Saturday organized a Parents Day and held a function for presentation of Madr-e-Meharban Awards-2014 here.
The award is presented every year to the individuals who perform commendable job in social work and serve the society.
Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Mubarak Gul, who is also Chairman of JKRDS, was the chief guest while as Legislator, Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal was the guest of honour on the occasion.
A debate on the topic “Immediate role of the parents and the teachers while curbing the menace of the present increase in the drug addiction” was held on the occasion in which students from different schools of the valley participated.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gul highlighted the role of parents and teachers in curbing the menace of drug addiction by keeping close vigil on wards.
The Speaker presented Madr-e-Meharbaan Award-2014 to a group of citizens, who in spite of being physically infirm are serving the society. They included Riyaz Ahmad Beig, Shaheena and S Rajinder Singh.
Riyaz is a District Social Welfare Officer who lost his both arms in an accident and by dint of hard work has become an officer by qualifying Kashmir Administrative Service and serving the society.
Shaheena is pursuing MBBS in Government Medical College, Srinagar.
S Rajinder Singh is a Social activist from Tral and working for the welfare of the society.
The Madr-e-Meharban Award was also presented to Bibi Parvez, Yasmena, Shahida and Tahira for their services made for the development and welfare of the society.
A film of the activities of JKRDS carried out during last year was also presented on the occasion.
Legislator Dr Mustafa Kamaal was also spoke on the occasion, describing Madr-e-Meharban as epitome of courage and compassion who remained in fore front for the betterment and welfare of the people and prosperity of the State. He said that Madr-e-Meharban was noble and a righteous woman.
Later, prizes were distributed among the students who participated in the debate competition.
