JAMMU, Apr 23: In a befitting tribute to Shakespeare on his 400th death anniversary, Samooh Theatre presented the legendary English playwright’s masterpiece play, ‘Hamlet’ in Dogri at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Adapted in Dogri by Dr. Gyan Singh and directed by young and talented director Ravinder Sharma, today’s presentation enacted by a cast of young local actors, was successful in conveying to the audience the characteristic themes of the original play which make the plot including indecision, seeking revenge and retribution, deception, ambition, loyalty and fate.
The Dogri adaptation scripted in native linguistic framework along with local names of characters and places, which apparently transformed the contextual referents of the original play, was thoughtfully dramatized in terms of production design in which layout of the set with an elevated level in the background approached by staircases from left and right, played a pivotal role in bestowing a kind of monumentality of the regal setting of the original plot.
The everyday modern apparel of characters, ingenious use of props drawn from present day popular culture and the sword fight in which all major characters lay dead, all seems to go well with the overall narrative which was additionally supported by appropriate background musical score and light design.
The cast included Sandeep Thakur, Rohit Bains, Hemant Magotra, Sandeep Manhas, Gautam Kumar, Ravindra Sharma, Kanika Sharma, Ajay Tamang, Samdhish Kumar, Chetan Charak, Shubham Singh, Suneedhi Sharma, Anchit Bakshi, Sugnadha Khera and Shammi Dhammir.
The lights were designed by Pankaj Sharma and operated by Imran Ahmed, music by Anchit Bakshi and operated by Rutvi Koul, make-up by Sahmmi Dahmir, sets by Kumar A. Bharti and choreography by Rohit Bains.
