HC directs appearance of IO in Quran theft case

Srinagar, Nov 26: High Court today directed Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, Ashiq Bukhari to ask the investigating officer to remain present along with the case diary regarding the theft of Holy Quran from SPS Museum.
The Division Bench of Justices Muhammad Yaqoob Mir and Muzaffar Hussain Attar passed the direction after the respondent counsel for the State submitted its latest status report, mentioning the Government had directed SSP Srinagar to expedite the investigation of theft cases at SPS museum.
The court in its earlier orders had directed the State to investigate the matter regarding thefts of antiques from the museum expeditiously.
“SSP Srinagar shall direct the investigating officer to remain present in the court along with CD and present status of investigation before the court,” directed the bench.
The Holy Quran which is missing from the museum is said to have the seal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
In 2003, the Holy Quran was reported missing from the SPS Museum. A case under FIR 106/03 was lodged in Rajbagh regarding the theft of the holy book.
The court also closed proceeding against University of Kashmir after Director Central Asian Museum  stated that the objects have been handed over to committee members constituted  vide Order No 55 of 2013 dated 09/10/13 under proper receipt.
Earlier, the court had granted University of Kashmir four more weeks to return 209 items, which were transferred to Central Asian Museum of the KU on August 25 1980.
The court further granted four weeks to counsel for State through Additional Advocate General S A Naik for filing response to the letter sent to the State Museum Shimla, is stated to be awaited. AAG stated that reminder has also been issued in this regard for collection of requisite information.
