Srinagar, May 1: High Court today directed the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to take effective steps for improving the city sanitation and curb the menace of stray dogs.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, the Division Bench of Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey and Justice Tashi Rabstan on increase of canines said more steps are required to be taken for ensuring prompt action on the issue.
Court has recorded the submissions of counsel for petitioner advocate Mian Tufail Ahmad who submitted that the garbage is dumped in and around various schools, hospitals, hotels and centre points of city which is root cause for increasing the menace of stray dogs. However, SMC counsel Moomin Khan submitted that the steps have been taken to curb menace of stray dogs.
“We direct the Commissioner SMC to take effective steps for improving city sanitation and curbing down the menace of stray dogs by reducing the availability of energy rich garbage to stray dogs”, Court directed.
Court further directed for putting more Hopper Vehicles in action in more shifts, so that there is some progress with reference to the issue and sought report within four weeks.
With regard to availability of anti-rabies, court has been informed that the same is being procured from the J&K Medical Supplies Corporation Limited. It will supplied to the Department of Health Services and provided to the needy people at Sub District Hospitals and Primary Health Centers.
About the awareness campaign relating to dog bites and anti-rabies management, SMC counsel detailed out the steps for implementation of the direction of court on the issue and added that the awareness shall continue by the Corporation till controlling of stray dog menace in the State is achieved.
