SRINAGAR : The National Highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, reopened after remaining closed yesterday due to mud and landslides, triggered by cloud burst between Drass and Kargil on August Ist night.
Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Drass told UNI over phone that the mud and landlides were cleared and the highway was put through last evening.
He said vehicles which were stopped at different places on the highway were allowed to proceed towards their respective destinations.
A traffic police official said here today that vehicles, including those carrying passengers and essentials for Ladakh region, were allowed from here this morning.
He said similarly empty trucks and other vehicles from different parts of the Ladakh region, including Leh, also were allowed this morning.
Official sources said a cloud burst on August Ist night triggered land and mudslides on the highway between Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, and Kargil.
They said a number of roads, connecting outskirt areas with Kargil, which too were closed due to mudslides, were also reopened.
