Hike in Excise duty on petrol-diesel rocks Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI: The hike in the Excise duty of petrol and diesel rocked the Lok Sabha today with Congress Members demanding immediate discussion on the issue.
The Opposition Congress trooped into the Well and shouted slogans against the government. The Opposition Members had given notice of adjournment over the issue which was disallowed by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, provoking the Members to storm into the Well and raise slogans.
Ms Mahajan said she would allow the Members to speak on their issues later at an appropriate point of time. However, Congress Leader M Mallikarjun Kharge wanted immediate discussion or immediately after Question Hour.
The Speaker refused to give commitment on timeline, saying “I do allow almost all Members most of the time but I have to take into consideration the needs and requirement of the entire House and moreover, the Chair can not be dictated”.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu expressed displeasure over the mobbing in the Well by Opposition Members, saying the government has no objection in holding discussion over the issue if the Speaker wished so.
Since the Congress Members remained unrelenting and continued with their slogan shouting, the Chair conducted Question Hour in the din. Besides the issue of Excise duty on petrol and diesel, AAP Members waved placards from their seats to raise the demand of renaming the Chandigarh airport after Shahid Bhagat Singh.
Members of YSRCP showed placards to press for their demand of special status to Andhra Pradesh. (UNI)
