SRINAGAR, Aug 23: As many as 50-teams will take part in the Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Hockey tournament which began here today.
The Rambagh hockey club arranged the event, which is being held for the first time in the valley at Gindun Sports Stadium in the Srinagar’s Rajbagh area, according to organizers. “This is the first time we have held a tournament in the name of our sixth Sikh Guru. This is a fantastic time. We have got teams from all across the valley,” One organizer said, adding the Government should upgrade the hockey facilities in the city.
One match was played on the first day, which brought a significant number of supporters from all across the valley. Bikram Club Srinagar and Gagjit Club Baramulla competed in the match where the Gagjit Club came out on top. “The major goal of this tournament was to overcome the influence of COVID-19 on youngsters so that children get more talent,” another organizer said.
The players were enthusiastic and encouraged the youth to take part in sports. “I am delighted to be a part of this competition. My message is to encourage youth to participate in sports and keep them away from drugs,” Ishfaq Ahmad, a local, said, adding that the government should place a greater emphasis on hockey.
Several dignitaries attended the event, including former BJP MLC Sunisdar Amberdar, G M Sofi, Ashok Bhat, and Asima Ali.
