JAMMU, Dec 23: Directorate of Horticulture Jammu celebrated ‘Kissan Diwas’ or National Farmers Day by way of organizing various Kissan Ghosties/Horticulture Camps at various places across Jammu division during the entire month of December.
Kissan Diwas or National Farmers Day is being observed every year on 23rd of December to celebrate the birthday of Choudhary Charan Singh Ji, the 5th Prime Minister of India.
All the staff of Horticulture Department along with voluntary support of locals of village Dharp distributed more than 500 high quality litchi plants for planting in the backyards of all the households of the village, once the frost days are over.
Earlier, a rally was taken out from the office of Director Horticulture Jammu at 10:30 A.M towards the village Dharap, The rally was flagged off by Director Horticulture Jammu, Raj Kumar Katoch.
During the current month, Horticulture department conducted 41 camps and Kissan Ghosties in the entire Jammu province and made people aware about benefits that can be harnessed from orchards. For example one litchi plant after12-15 year of age produce litchi worth 5000 to 6000 rupees and if 100 plants are planted in one Hectare the income of about 5 to 6 lac per annum can be ensured.
The farmers were also educated about various schemes being implemented by the Horticulture Department. Similarly, organic farming, local homemade pesticides like chrysenthum flower extract, Mature Tomato leaf extract and Garlic Oil Spray were discussed in detail which can keep the insects away from kitchen gardens.
