The results for JEE Main 2017 are recently declared by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The exam was held in more than 100 centers including 9 international centers. More than 11 lakh aspirants registered for the exam. Cracking JEE Mains is the first milestone for aspiring IITians. Only the top 2,20,000 students who qualify JEE Main will sit for JEE Advanced. Candidates often get confused between the two tests, wondering what is the basic difference between JEE Advanced and JEE Main. This article attempts to clear all the confusion regarding the same.
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are quite inter-related but at the same time, they differ in various aspects. The score of JEE Main is essential for getting admission into the 4-year degree courses of science and engineering in institutions like NITs, IIITs and other government colleges in India. Every candidate clearing these eligibility criteria may apply for Mains. Only those who qualify JEE Main are entitled to appear for JEE Advanced. The candidates who further clear JEE Advanced are then entitled to admission to engineering programs offered by the world renowned IITs.
JEE Main examines only the speed of aspirants whereas JEE Advanced tests both, speed and accuracy. The syllabus for both the tests is different as more topics are included in the Advanced level exam. JEE Main consists of MCQs whereas questions in JEE Advanced are of objective type. An applicant can appear for Mains exam only 3 times in his lifetime whereas JEE Advanced can be attempted only 2 times in consecutive years.

Difference in Syllabus
JEE Main syllabus is based on class 11 and 12 syllabi of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education). The syllabus for JEE Advanced is different as it includes few more topics. The topics included/ excluded in both the exams are given below:
*Physics topics included in JEE Advanced and not in JEE Main: Thermal Physics: Newton’s law of cooling, Kirchoff’s law, Wein’s Displacement Law, Blackbody radiation, Absorptive and Emissive powers and Stefan’s Law.
*Physics topics included in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced: The entire chapter of Semiconductor devices from the NCERT is not a part of the JEE Advanced syllabus. Questions from topics like Logic gates, Electromagnetic waves and its characteristics, Electromagnetic spectrum and Communication systems that are asked in Mains are not included in Advanced.
*Chemistry topics included in JEE Advanced and not in JEE Main: The chapters of Electrochemistry, Nuclear Chemistry and Radioactivity are assessed in Advanced.
*Chemistry topics included in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced: Biomolecules and Chemistry in Everyday life are excluded from the syllabus of JEE Advanced.
*Math topics included in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced: The syllabus for JEE Advanced for Mathematics does not include the chapter of Sets, Relations and Functions, Statistics and Probability, Trigonometry (Heights and Distances) and Mathematical Reasoning.

Difference in Exam Pattern
The exam pattern of both the exams also differ significantly. They have been described below-
Exam Pattern of JEE Main
*JEE Mains consists of two papers namely- Paper 1 and Paper 2.
*Paper 1 is for those applicants who wish to get admitted in BE and B. Tech courses while Paper 2 is for those who seek admission in B. Arch and B. Planning courses.
*Aspirants must specify if they wish to appear for Paper 1, Paper 2 or both while registration.
*The mode of Paper 1 is both online and offline while that for Paper 2 is offline.
*JEE Mains Paper 1 will consist of 90 MCQs and the duration of the exam is 3 hours.
*The total marks an aspirant can secure in each subject are 120, the entire total adding upto 360.
*Each correct answer is awarded +4 marks and a score of -1 is deducted for a wrong answer.
Exam Pattern of JEE Advanced
*JEE Advanced also consists of 2 papers both of which are compulsory. Appearing for Paper 2 is not optional.
*Aspirants seeking admission in architectural courses of IIT must appear for the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) in addition to the 2 papers.
*The mode of both papers is offline i.e. the exam is pen and paper based.
*Each paper consists of 54 questions. The total marks an aspirant can secure in each subject are 124, the total adding upto 372 for both papers. The duration of each paper is 3 hours.
*JEE Advanced will have sections where there is more than one correct option. A correct response will be awarded +3 or +4 marks while negative marking will range from -1 to -2 depending on the section. Negative marking will not be applicable for some questions.

Difference in Difficulty Level
Aspirants may feel that JEE Main is more difficult as the number of applicants is 10 times more than those who qualify for JEE Advanced. But in the 2nd tier exam, the competition is amongst the best of candidates who clear the cut off marks of Mains.
JEE Advanced requires an in-depth knowledge of the syllabi. It also requires intuitive thinking as the questions are application based. There has to be systematic and comprehensive understanding of concepts. JEE Main is easier compared to its higher counterpart. Students must know the basics to do well in the exam.
The questions asked in the advanced exam will be of higher level, though they will be based on easy formulae. Application of many concepts will be needed to answer questions. The questions from JEE Mains are direct and straightforward but more time-consuming. They are based on basic concepts and easy formulae as also are less application based.
The biggest difference in difficulty level of JEE Advanced and JEE Main is the prediction of question paper. Coaching centers know the exact pattern of Mains exam and hence know what kind of questions should be expected. A lot of mock tests for the same are available.
The prediction of questions in JEE Advanced is extremely hard, since an applicant may have never come across. Mock tests for this exam cannot be relied upon as the actual exam will be very different. So, students can be very well prepared for JEE Mains but a lot of hard work will be required to ace the Advanced.
Difference in Cut Off
A major difference lies in the cut off for both the exams. About 2.23 lakh students qualify JEE Main whereas about 35,000 students of them qualify JEE Advanced. Students need to clear the cut-off marks to qualify for the exam. However, the admission cut-off will be declared separately by the participating institutes.
To qualify Mains, aspirants need to only score more than the cut off declared. There is no subject-wise cut off and only the total score is considered. This acts in the favor of aspirants. The cut off is around 105-115 every year.
Candidates have to clear both subject-wise and total aggregate JEE Advanced 2017 Cut Off to qualify in JEE Advanced. An aspirant securing around 10-12 marks in each subject and about 75 marks as the aggregate will qualify the exam. An AIR of around 8,000 will guarantee a seat in good programs of various IITs.
