Srinagar, Oct 27: In a move to promote aspiring women athletes, Dal lake witnessed its first-ever all-women traditional boat race today, with participation from over a hundred enthusiasts early in the morning.
Organizers said the event aimed to uncover hidden talent, attracting participants from diverse backgrounds, including girl artisans who showcased impressive strength and skill.
Bilkis Mir, India’s first-ever female chief jury member at the recent Paris Olympics for water sports, organized the event and described it as unique and significant in highlighting new talent.
“We often see various tournaments held for men but far fewer for women. This race included participants who had never ventured out of their homes before. It was historic and has enabled us to discover new talent,” she said.
According to the organizers, a total of 150 women participated, and 35 were selected to receive training in Delhi to compete in national and international events.
They added that with October being the off-season for tourism in Kashmir, events like this help show that Kashmir remains vibrant and exciting throughout the year.
“Moreover, we wanted to showcase that women are as capable as anyone else. We saw it in the Olympics and Asian Games, where our women athletes excelled; events like these demonstrate talent beyond just men,” Bilkis said.
The event was initiated by Suresh B. Kapadia, a native of Nashik, Maharashtra, and organized by JKARS, with sponsorship from the Indian brand CAPRESE.
Organizers said that Kapadia has significantly contributed to the economic, social and cultural upliftment of Kashmir and played a key role in putting Gurez on the tourism map.
Madhiya Farooq, one of the participants, said, “This was the first-ever race held at Dal Lake for women, and I hope more events like this are held in the future. Sport is not only for boys; women can also excel, and we’ve proven it.”
Shaheena and Gulshan secured the first position, Nisha Bashir and Ishrat came second, while Rafia and Khushboo took third place. In addition to the top positions, all participants received attractive cash rewards and certificates.
Many of the participants were artisans involved in crafting world-class bags for Caprese, the event’s co-sponsor, making this race an empowering moment for them, showcasing that hands skilled in delicate artistry are also strong and determined enough to race toward the future.
Dr. Burhan, President of the J&K Association of Rowing and Sculling, delivered the vote of thanks. Other dignitaries present included VC LCMA Younis Malik, Special Secretary of Tourism Mathura Masoom, Principal BHSS Nowpora Dr. Masrat Parveen, Dr. Soulihaa Rasool, Founder of Holistic Minds & Soul, famous broadcaster Tabraiz Madani, and Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo.
