JAMMU, Apr 9: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) today celebrated Valour Day at CRPF Camp, Nagrota in the memory of victory of a contingent of 2nd battalion of CRPF over the attack of 3500 men strong Pakistani Brigade on April 9, 1965 at Sardar Post in Gujarat in which 34 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the skirmish,
Eight valiant CRPF men laid down their lives at the call of duty. The day is observed as Valour Day in the force.
Kuldeep Dhar, IGP CRPF, Jammu sector decorated 146 officers and jawans of CRPF with six Parakram Padak, one Prime Minister life saving Padak, 96 Antrik Suraksha Padak and 46 Director General Disc and commendation letters on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Dhar said that the CRPF has its origin on July 27, 1939. From a single Battalion in 1939, the force has now grown to 235 battalions, 42 Group Centres, 20 training institution and 21 Composite Hospitals.
“It is the only para-military force in the country, which has 3 Mahila Battalions, 10 CoBRA Bns & 2 NDRF Units. The bulk of CRPF companies are deployed in Jammu & Kashmir, LWE affected States and North-Eastern Region to quell the terrorist, Naxal/insurgent activities and to maintain law and order,’’ Dhar said.
He said it was the CRPF which bore the brunt of the first onslaughts of the Chinese at Hot Springs (Ladakh) on October 21, 1959 when a small CRPF patrol was ambushed by the Chinese. In the ensuing skirmish, as many as 10 CRPF men had laid down their lives for the motherland. Their Martyrdom on October 21 is observed throughout the country as the Police Commemoration Day.
The brave jawans of the Force had repulsed militants’ attacks on Parliament House on December 13, 2001 and on Ram Janambhoomi/Babri Masjid Complex in Ayodhya on July 5, 2005.
D C Dimari, IGP, Medical, Pawan Kumar Sharma, DIGP and M C Panwar, DIGP also attended the function, which was followed by `Bada Khana’ in which officers and jawans had their lunch together.
