JAMMU, Apr 10: T20 Cricket Tournament, being organized by District Police Jammu under Civic Action Programme was inaugurated in the playground of MHAC School Nagbani, here today.
In the inauguration ceremony, Dr SD Singh Jamwal, IGP Jammu zone was the chief guest, who declared the Tournament open.
He was accompanied by Dr Sunil Gupta, SSP Jammu, Rajnesh Pran, SO to DIG JSK, Mumtaz Hussain, CO IRP 7th Bn and Arun Gupta, SP Rural Jammu among other police and civil administration dignitaries.
Family members of police martyrs, Ex-Sarpanches, sports enthusiasts and civil society members were also part of the opening ceremony.
The tournament will witness 16 teams from various cricket clubs of Jammu rural zone testing their mettle against each other and vie for the top honours.
The organizers said that through the tournament, District Police Jammu aims to promote sports culture, give budding players a platform to showcase their talent, engage youth in constructive activities, bridge the gap between police and society and to spread messages for making society crime free.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Jamwal said, “This tournament aims to highlight two issues that have the potential to affect youth in a negative manner-non compliance of traffic rules leading to fatalities and debilitating injuries, and menace of drug abuse which can rend asunder the very fabric of our society.
On the first day of tournament, two matches were played.
In the first match, Singh Cricket Club Akhnoor drubbed Gho Manhsan Cricket Club by 17 runs, while in the second match, Floura Cricket Club defeated Sidhara-B in a close contest by one wicket.
