ISLAMABAD: After emerging as the single largest party in Pakistan’s national assembly in July 25 polls, Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) is now planning for a grand swearing in ceremony even as efforts are on to contact independents to muster requisite numbers.
“Imran Khan would prefer a People’s ceremony of oath taking where thousands can watch him take the oath as PM of Pakistan,” tweeted Mr Naeem ul Haque, chief spokesman of the party.
He further wrote – “Perhaps D Chowk area may be the right place to do it. Let’s hope so. Will keep on updating on this”.
D-Chowk is a large town square located on the junction of Jinnah Avenue and Constitution Avenue in Islamabad. It is in effect close to several important government buildings including the Presidency and the Prime Minister’s Office.
The square is a frequent venue for political rallies and other public gatherings.
Meanwhile, number game has started as PTI with 115 seats is still short of majority and thus, PTI leaders are reaching out to Independent and other newly-elected lawmakers.
Moreover, the PTI leaders, who bagged more than one seat, will have to vacate additional seats. Mr Imran Khan himself will have to vacate four seats as has won from five constituencies.
Another senior leader Ghulam Sarwar Khan also won two seats and will have to vacate one.
According to a report in Pakistan daily ‘Dawn’, Mr Khan had himself contacted Mumtaz Bhutto of the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) to formally invite to join the coalition government while a former secretary general of the PTI Jahangir Tareen has established contacts with Independents and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) which has won six seats. There are 13 Independents. (AGENCIES)
