Incentive for Ladakh teachers

Sir,
This refers to the editorial’Enticement for Ladakh teachers’ (DE, June 15,2017).It is heartening to read that the Education Minister of our State has taken a very progressive decision of doubling the salary of the teaching staff opting for posting to Ladakh region. There is no doubt that Ladakh region having two districts, namely Leh and Kargil, being situated above 11000 feet above sea level,is an extremely cold region.Life in this region almost comes to a standstill during winter as most of the roads remain closed due to heavy snowfall.
Therefore, rendering service in extreme climatic conditions and inaccessible areas in this region becomes difficult for teachers, especially those hailing from Jammu region. So the schools remain understaffed because few teachers agree to serve in such difficult physical and climatic conditions with the result the academic activites of the hapless students suffer. As such it is imperative that some incentive is provided to the teachers serving in such hostile climatic conditions.
Now that the Education Minister has announced doubling of salaries of the teaching staff opting for posting in Ladakh region,it will serve as a big incentive for the teaching staff and young teachers will volunteer to serve in such areas. The Govt should also think of revising the honorarium of PG candidates engaged on academic arrangement  in Govt.Hr.Sec.Schools to teach the 11th and 12th classes. These candidates are selected through screening test but are paid a paltry sum of only Rs 7000 per month, which a cruel joke with them, especially those serving in far flung areas. The Government also ought to provide residential quarters to the teachers in inaccessible areas  in all the regions and enhance their salary/honorarium of teachers serving in such areas so that they can serve there properly and students donot suffer.Last but not least, the teachers selected on the basis of RBA Category should invariably be posted in notified RBA areas, as per the Reservation Act,so that the students of these areas are able to be benefitted by them.
Yours etc…
Ashok Sharma,
Udhampur.
