Increase chopper services to rescue people trapped in flooded areas: Azad

SRINAGAR, Sept 9: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today again shot a letter to Prime Minister, Minister for Defence, Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Health , Army Chief, Air Marshal and Union Home Secretary asking them to speed up relief and rescue operations in flood hit Jammu and Kashmir.
He has asked them to increase number of helicopters so that lakhs of people stranded at their respective rooftops are rescued and shifted to safer places.
Mr Azad also urged Government of India to put all efforts to restore communication facilities so that affected people could be contacted and rescued at an earliest. Leader of Opposition landed in Kashmir valley today and again visited number of areas in Srinagar, wherever there was accessibility and interacted with affected populace. People informed that rescue operations require to be accelerated as still many people are trapped in their buildings and are crying for help. He asked the Government of India to increase the human resources of Army so that lives of people including elderly, women and children are saved.
Commending the relief and rescue operations by DMRF, Army, Police and other para-military forces in Jammu and Kashmir, Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to further speed up the operations so that maximum people are rescued at the earliest.
On the directions of Mr Azad, a written communiqué was sent by his office at New Delhi to PMO, in which, an increase in the number of helicopters was demanded so that maximum air sorties could be undertaken and large number of people are air-lifted to safer places. Besides, it was also written in the communiqué, the quantity of food supply and medicines be also be increased as victims of flood hit areas are increasing in number day by day. It was also highlighted that as the losses are in hundreds of crores so the Government of India must continue to support the relief and rehabilitation measures with unwavering enthusiasm.
In Kashmir valley, Mr Azad said that that panic has gripped the state as telephone services have got badly damaged and people are unable to contact each other. He asked the Government of India to involve the private cellular phone companies so that communication is restored as soon as possible.
Talking to media persons in Srinagar, Mr Azad informed that he had gone to New Delhi for two days to establish contact with concerned departments of Central Government so that rescue operations are further fastened. He said that he spoke to Health Minister to provide more number of teams of doctors with adequate medicine supply as the number of victims has swollen to manifolds. He informed that he also consulted number of Boat Manufacturers in Haryana and Pune and inquired in how much minimum time periods boats can be shifted to Kashmir valley. He also gave purchase orders on Congress party level and asked them to provide the same as soon as possible so that people trapped in flood water could be saved.
