India, China end border standoff

NEW DELHI, Sept 30:
India and China have “successfully terminated” the over three-week long standoff of its troops in Chumar and Demchok areas in eastern Ladakh and will hold a meeting on border affairs next month, the Government said here today.
As per understanding reached between India and China, the two sides have carried out disengagement and redeployment of border troops in Chumar and Demchok areas in eastern Ladakh on September 26-27, to restore the “status quo ante as on September 1”, the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement here.
A meeting of the Border Commanders of the two sides was held today at Spanggur Gap to confirm that the stand-off between the border troops of two sides in Chumar and Demchok areas has been successfully terminated, it said.
“The two sides have also agreed that a meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) will be convened in India on 16-17 October 2014 to discuss various issues pertaining to the maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the border areas,” the Ministry said.
The two Armies were engaged in a stand-off at Chumar region in Ladakh, coinciding with the first visit of the Chinese President.
Meanwhile, after remaining locked in a bitter face-situation for more than a fortnight Indian and Chinese’s troops will jointly celebrate 65th national day of China at a forward post at Spanggur Gap across the border in Ladakh tomorrow.
On the same venue, Army commanders of the two sides met last Thursday where they agreed to end the stand-off in Chumar region which started on September 10 and tense situation had even overshadowed the Chinese President’s Xi Jinping visit to India.
As the two sides pulled back their troops from Chumar and the status quo ante was restored as it existed on September 1, sources said, a contingent of Indian Army troops will cross over the Line of Actual Control to participate in the event to be organised on the China’s national day.
The two sides have been holding such ceremonial meetings regularly since 1991 to maintain peace and tranquility on the LAC through the forums of flag meetings and BPMs.
During the event, Chinese cultural heritage will be displayed that included various cultural programmes by the Chinese troupe, officials said. (Agencies)
