Semifinalists have been spotted in the ERGO Hockey Junior World Cup with a 9-1 over South Africa to set up a semi-final with India.
The semi-final line-up is: India vs Holland and England vs Argentina.
In quarter-final matches played today, India beat Spain by 2-1; Argentina beat USA by 2-0; England upset Australia by 1-0 and Holland rout South African by 9-2.
Argentina advanced into semi-final at the cost of their Panamerican rivals USA 2-0.
The first half saw hardly any goal scoring chances until the 34th minute, when Argentina won the first penalty corner of the game.
Julia Gomes Fantasia converted a penalty corner in the 34th minute to score Argentina’s first goal with a drag flick.
With 22 minutes remaining on the clock the Leoncitas won their second penalty corner; this time Gomes Fantasia’s flick was cleared by US defender Kelsey Harbin. The US girls forced three penalty corners in a row but could not capitalise on any of them. The Leoncitas eventually doubled their lead on 60 minute thanks to Roberta Werthein securing the 2-0 win.
England upset Australia by a lone goal in the third quarter-final match. The all-important goal was scored by Grace Balsdon in the 26th minute. Due to hot conditions, the match was played in four quarters.
Holland were the fourth team to make it to the semi-final by outplaying South Africa by 9-1.
Holland scorers: van Wijk Lieke ( 11th, 15thm 40th, 42nd penalty corners), de Lange Lisanne (19th FG, 63rd PC), Verschoor Maria (55th FG) and Saxton Samantha (57th FG). For South Africa Marks Toni scored a field goal in the third minute. (UNI)
