DUBAI, June 16: Indian artist Anup Mathew Thomas has been named among the winners of the Abraaj Group Art Prize given for potential to champion new artwork.
In its sixth year, the Abraaj Group Art Prize is awarded annually to five artists from Middle East, North Africa and South Asia on the basis of their proposal for new artworks.
The final works, to be made under the supervision of guest curator Nada Raza from Pakistan, will be unveiled at the ‘Art Dubai’ fair in March 2014.
Other winners of the honour this year include Abbas Akhavan and Kamrooz Aram from Iran, Basim Magdy from Egypt and Bouchra Khalili from Morocco.
Thomas, who is a visual artist living in Bangalore, predominantly uses photography as a medium.
The winners were chosen on the basis of artistic ability, potential to champion arts in the region and a history of exhibition regionally and internationally, including participation in recent editions of Art Dubai, the Sharjah Biennial and Kochi-Muziris Biennale among others.
“It will be exciting to see how these five artists work with our guest curator towards the exhibition that will be unveiled at Art Dubai in March 2014,” said Savita Apte, Chair of The Abraaj Group Art Prize.
The Abraaj Group, a leading private equity manager investing in global growth markets, launched the prize in 2008 to foster and reward artistic development in the region. (PTI)
