Indian prisoner Chamel Singh’s body arriving Jammu today

JAMMU, Mar 13: The body of an Indian prisoner Chamel Singh, who was killed in custody in Lahore’s jail is reportedly arriving today in his native village in the city outskirts of this winter capital, reliable sources here said.

” Pakistan has handed over the body to the agencies concerned in India via Wagah border, which is likely to reach his village in Pargwal area close to the Indo-Pak International Border,” sources here told reporters.

Meanwhile, a police official confirmed the report of return of Chamel Singh’s body by Pakistan and its handing over to his family members for last rites.

“The officials have left with the body from the Wagah Border and may reach here late tonight,” he added.

Chamel Singh, who was about to complete his five-year imprisonment on charges of espionage, died in Lahore’s Lakhpat jail on January 15, amid reports that he was ‘mercilessly beaten’ by prison staff and he died two days later at Jinnah Hospital.

BJP leader Sat Pal Sharma however, criticized the State Government for not using the Critical Care Ambulance arranged by the party to carry the body of the prisoner.

“We had arranged an air conditioned ambulance but instead of using it, the administration shifted the body in an ordinary ambulance,” Mr Sharma told reporters.

Meanwhile, District Development Commissioner Jammu Sanjeev Verma said the body is on the way and will arrive tonight. (AGENCIES)
