Institution of Engineers celebrates Habitat Day

JAMMU, Oct 1: Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre celebrated World Habitat Day in its auditorium at Chhanni Himmat here today.
A seminar on the topic, “Changing Cities, Building Opportunities” was organized in this connection. A large number of engineers from the region participated in the programme. Vinod Sharma (FIE), Director ERA, Jammu was the chief guest while B B Sharma, FIE, Chairman Jammu Local Center presided over.
Six papers on the topic were presented by engineers – S C Thukral, P K Nanda, B L Rawal, Deepak Byotra, Pooja Sharma and Arjun Singh Kotwal. The speakers highlighted the traffic chaos and activities of un-planned constructions in the cities. It was urged that the Municipal Corporation authorities should act on war footing so that the city of temples does not turn into urban slum.
They pointed out that the world has never witnessed such a rapid urbanization, neither it has witnessed a swift rise in the absolute number of people migrating. They said urban growth and migration are inter-linked and the people are attracted towards the bright light of the cities and the facilities. Today one billion people live in slums and if the government failed to take measures, this number is expected to double in the next thirty years.
Sunil Sharma, MIE, former Hony Secretary conducted the proceedings of the function and presented vote of thanks.
