JAMMU, Sept 12: Divisional Level Inter-District Taekwondo Championship in all age groups viz- Under-14, 17 and 19 years, being organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports, District Jammu, got underway at Brahman Sabha, Parade, here today.
In all, 222 students drawn from 7 Districts which included Jammu, Kathua, Poonch, Doda, Samba, Udhampur and Reasi Districts are taking part in the competition.
Earlier, the competitions were declared open by Chanchal Kour, District Youth Services & Sports Officer, Jammu in a simple and well attendant function.
The main objective of these competitions is to select the teams in these disciplines for the forthcoming higher level competitions.
In various weight categories of Taekwondo Under-14 girls, the gold medals were bagged by Manvi Sharma of Samba district, Tanvi Katal of Samba district, Shruti of Udhampur district, Nitika Sharma of Samba, Gitika Thapa of Samba, Anamika of Kathua, Nataksha of Udhampur and Shefali Atri of Samba.
Meanwhile, at KK Hakhu Stadium Jammu, in District Level Inter-School Hockey Under-19 boys, APS Jammu Cantt defeated HSS RS Pura by 3-2 goals; APS Kalu Chak drubbed HSS Gole Gujral by 3-0 goals and HSS Gandhi Nagar trounced APS Ratnu Chak by 2-0 goals.
At Udhampur, in Divisional Level Inter District Under-19 boys Cricket Tournament, being organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports, under the supervision of DYSSO Udhampur, Sudesh Chalotra, District Jammu defeated District Poonch by 13 runs, while District Udhampur thrashed District Doda by 10 wickets and District Kathua crushed District Kishtwar by 66 runs.
Meanwhile, Jammu district thrashed Kathua district by 7 wickets in the semifinals to seal berth in the finals to be played tomorrow, which will be followed by prize distribution ceremony.
Batting first, Kathua scored 107 runs in 20 overs. For Jammu district, right arm off-spinner, Marutwan was the wrecker-in-chief, who took 4 important wickets in his 4 overs.
In reply, Jammu district chased the target in 14.2 overs by losing 3 wickets, thus won the match by 7 wickets. Abdul Samad and Sarthak Peshin contributed 27 and 24 runs to the total respectively.
