JAMMU, July 18: With an aim to integrate the local youth and to promote sports amongst the populace of Surankote Tehsil, a Rashtriya Rifle Battalion under the aegis of Counter Insurgency Force, Romeo organised a 3-day Inter-Village tug of war competition at Kulali, here today.
The event saw overwhelming response in which teams from Kulali, Daraba, Lower Marah, Upper Marah, Trikana and Muri participated. All the teams exhibited conspicuous enthusiasm and competitive spirit. The final match was played between teams from Kulali and Upper Marah today. The match was witnessed by local supporters of both the teams, in which team from Kulali was the deserving winner. Both the teams on their part put up a fine display of sportsmanship and discipline.
The occasion was graced by village heads, sarpanches and panches of the villages including local populace who witnessed the keenly contested final. Commanding Officer Rashtriya Rifles, while talking to the participants, highlighted the origin of the game in India in 12th century AD in the area what is today the State of Orissa on the east coast. The famous Sun Temple of Konark has a stone relief on the west wing of the structure, clearly showing the game of Tug of War in progress. This sport is quite popular in the Army also.
Chief guest, Mohd Aslam, Sarpanch Lower Marah distributed prizes among winners and runners-up teams on the occasion.
