JAMMU, Feb 23: Ironman Kapil Arora created history again by participating in India’s first Frozen Lake Marathon at Pangong Lake in Ladakh on February 20 and entered his name in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ for the second time.
He has already entered his name in the world record previously as a part of another running event in Satara in September 2015. This time, the half marathon distance of 21.1 km was run on the Frozen Pangong Lake in sub-zero temperature at 13,862 feet above sea level, which was officially registered in the Guinness World Record.
The marathon started from Lukung and ended at Maan village, Ladakh wherein 75 participants participated. This event was aptly named ‘Last Run’, a strong message to save our glaciers overlooking the impending danger due to global warming.
The marathon was organized by the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL) in collaboration with Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, Tourism Department, Ladakh and Leh District administration.
The run was flagged off by Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC (Leh) Tashi Gyalson.
Creating history, Kapil said, “I have run over 60 half and full marathons across the globe but this marathon was different, something you can never train for. Running on hard ICE with tampons fixed to one’s shoes and three layers of clothing to fight bitter cold winds and environment was extraordinarily challenging.”
It was heartening to see Indian Army and ITBP personnel were helping us at each hydration station which was set up on the Lake at every 5km mark helping all runners by offering them sports drinks and warm water, he said.
After the event, Kapil distributed the copies of his bestselling book 21.1 running mistakes to all the dignitaries presented on the dais.
It is pertinent to mention here that Kapil Arora is an endurance athlete and has done 4 Ironman’s Triathlons and over 60 half, full and ultra marathons across four continents across the globe.
