JAMMU, Jan 17: Olympian Para-Archer Rakesh Kumar from Jammu and Kashmir has been honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award for 2024 by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport. This award celebrates his remarkable achievements in Para-Archery, which include a bronze medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris (Mixed Compound Team), a gold medal and two silver medals at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, and a gold medal at the 2023 World Archery Para Championship in Pilsen, Czech Republic.
Rakesh Kumar’s achievement has been hailed by several prominent figures. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, took to social media to congratulate Rakesh for his dedication and achievements. “Rakesh has brought immense pride to J&K and the nation, inspiring young sportspersons with his grit and determination,” Sinha stated. He wished Rakesh continued success and greater glory in his future endeavours.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also praised Rakesh’s accomplishment, calling it a milestone for J&K. “Heartiest congratulations to Olympian Rakesh Kumar of Katra for being conferred the prestigious Arjuna Award. Rakesh has made a name for himself in para-archery and serves as an inspiration for all of us in J&K,” Abdullah posted on social media, adding his best wishes for Rakesh’s future success.
Anshul Garg, CEO of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), also acknowledged Rakesh’s achievement. Garg highlighted the significant role of the SMVDSB Sports Complex in Katra, which provided world-class facilities to Rakesh during his training. The complex currently trains over 150 budding athletes, and Rakesh’s success serves as a testament to the growing sports infrastructure in the region.
