Jammu farmers flagged off to Shekhawati Festival

JAMMU Feb 7: To provide exposure to the farmers about best agricultural practices outside the State and with a focus on organic farming, a group of 30 farmers representing different districts of Jammu Division along with 10 officers of the Department of Agriculture, was flagged off by Director Agriculture Jammu Ajay Khajuria, to attend 18th Shekhawati Organic Festival -2013 at Nawalgarh (Rajasthan) from February 8 to 10, 2013 from Krishi Bhawan, Directorate of Agriculture Jammu.
Director Agriculture Jammu while interacting with the farmers disclosed that the participatory tour is aimed at popularization and implementation of the organic farming amongst the farmers by acquainting them with latest knowledge and developments in this field.
Organic farming has great relevance for sustainability of agriculture as it reduces the input cost for production of crops besides being eco-friendly for farmers. The technique adds to their income also as the organic products are in great demand in the present day health conscious world.
He disclosed that under different Centrally sponsored schemes in Jammu division an area of 3000 hectares is being covered for implementation of adoption and certification of organic farming through service providers by the department. He added that the registration of farmers for certification of organic produce and supply of organic inputs is in progress in the areas which are being covered under organic farming.
The farmers will be witnessing the stalls displaying the various organic farming techniques and methods with practical demonstration besides visit to the organic farms of the farmers and food courts of Rajasthan in addition to the cultural programmes.
Joint Director Agriculture Inputs Sushil Sahni, Vegetable Agronomist K K Uppal, Agri. Chemist G D Gupta, Deputy Director Central C M Sharma and other officers of the department were also present.
