Jammu to host historic Chess event from Dec 8

JAMMU, Dec 5: Historic National Chess event with Rs 20,000,00 cash prizes will begin at Jammu from December 8.
This was informed by Atul Kumar Gupta, President All J&K Chess Association while addressing media persons at Press Club, here today.
He said that All J&K Chess Association got the honour to organize the biggest National Chess Championship of India, which is the amalgam of two events National B and National A, under the new format implemented by All India Chess Federation (AICF) from this year only. “This historic event in new format was allotted to J&K after great efforts by AJKCA. As India is also a separate zone so this is simultaneously also a kind of Asian Zonal event. On World Chess Federation site it is given as Asian Zonal 3.7 event as there are 7 separate zones in Asia,” Atul said.
He further said that such events can bring boom in sports activities in the state and can motivate thousands of youth to get involved in sports.
“This event will give highest level of exposure to our state players and will play a big role in diversion of mind of youth of our state towards sports and games,” he expressed.
He informed that J&K State also got the opportunity to field 8 players in this event being a host state.
“This event is being conducted with fresh rules by allowing the wild card entry only for players with rating of more than 2000. About 170 players, 36 Managers and 10 officials with a total of 216 from 36 different affiliated units of All India Chess Federation have confirmed their participation in this prestigious event of India,” Atul added.
He said about 40 titled players Grandmasters and International Masters have confirmed their participation, adding some Arjuna Awardee players have also confirmed their participation and the players from far off places like Mizoram and Andaman-Nicobar Islands are also coming to participate in this historic event.
“The event will be held as per FIDE Laws of Chess under Swiss System in which total 13 rounds will be played. The venue of the event is Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, Channi Bye Pass, Jammu. Total prize money for top 10 players will be Rs 20,000,00 with first prize as Rs 5, 000,00; second as Rs 4, 000,00; 3rd prize as Rs 3, 000,00, 4th prize as Rs 2,000,00; 5th Rs 1.50 lakh, 6th as Rs 1.00 lakh, 7th as Rs 1.00 lakh, 8th as Rs 1 lakh, 9th as Rs 75,000 and 10th as Rs 75000,” Atul informed.
Atul was accompanied in the Press Conference by Baldev Raj,Taranvir Singh, Kuljeet Jamwal, Raj Kumar, Vikas Nanda and Dr AS Bhatia.
