Jammu University wins Gold in Sabre Men, 2nd runner-up Overall Trophy

All India Inter University Fencing C’ship concludes

JAMMU, Nov 10: The University of Jammu (JU) made a significant impact at the All India Inter University Fencing (Men & Women) Championship 2024-25, lifting the Sabre Men’s Gold Medal. The prestigious event, which was hosted by Jammu University from November 6 to 10, culminated in a grand valedictory ceremony. The Overall Championship Trophy for Fencing (Men & Women) was claimed by GNDU Amritsar, while the University of Jammu secured the second runner-up Overall Trophy.
In the men’s category, GNDU Amritsar emerged as the overall champion, with the University of Jammu finishing as the runner-up. The joint second runner-up positions were claimed by CU Mohali and Guru Kashi University, Bathinda. In the women’s category, GNDU Amritsar triumphed, while Guru Kashi University, Bathinda, was the runner-up, and Punjab University Chandigarh secured the second runner-up trophy.
Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor of Jammu University, was the chief guest at the ceremony and congratulated the organizers, participants, and officials for the smooth conduct of the event. He emphasized the importance of fostering sportsmanship, camaraderie, and connections among students through such competitions. Prof. Rai also highlighted JU’s commitment to promoting sports culture, with
Satish Sharma, Minister for Youth Services and Sports, sent his best wishes through a message, expressing support for sports development in the region. He also announced plans to enhance infrastructure, including upgrading the multipurpose gymnasium hall to meet international standards and providing financial assistance for further development.
The championship saw over 1200 players from 108 teams representing universities from across the country, making it one of the most significant fencing events in the nation.
Prominent attendees included Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Dean of Research Studies; Prof. Parkash C. Anthal, Dean of Students Welfare; Rashid Ahmed Chowdhary, Competition Director; and Adv. Supriya Sharma, a former fencer.
The proceeding of the function was carried by Vandana Sharma, Lecturer DSPE where as the formal vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Komal Nagar, I/c Assistant Director, DSPE.
The prize distribution ceremony was conducted by Vimal Kishore, Asstt. Prof. DSPE.
Others present there were Ravish Vaid, Gagan Kumar, Vikas Karlopia, Padam Dev Singh, Jai Bharat, Ashok Singh Bali, Harinderpal Singh, Inderjeet Singh, Rishiv Sharma, Richa Mandla, Manjeet Kotwal and officials of the participating teams.
