JAMMU, Mar 9: All India Jat Mahasabha-J&K, today urged upon Governor NN Vohra to provide one time compensation of Rs 25 lakh per family to the Indo-Pak war refugees of 1947, 1965 and 1971.
The demand was raised by president, Man Mohan Singh (former Mayor, Jammu) during a meeting held here in which along with Jats, members from other border and refugee committees from Kathua to Akhnoor, were present.
The speakers said since this issue is long pending for settlement the Government must pay this amount of compensation to the refugees well before April 30, as these people have suffered a lot for a considerable period of time. They further pointed out that any amount less than this amount will not be acceptable, keeping in view the present value of money due to its depreciation.
He further said that if the Government failed to fulfill their demand, a big agitation will be launched in the State under the banner of All India Jat Mahasabha-J&K.
The meeting asked the administration to disclose how the amount of Rs 2000 crore provided by the Central Government for one time settlement to refugees will be distributed among the refugees since this amount appears to be very meager.
Ch Man Mohan also demanded to be notified of what papers and documents are required to finalize the settlement since most of the families have fragmented into small (Nuclear families) families. He requested that this should be done on war footing basis by deputing a separate staff to the villages where ever the refugees are settled and no one should be left untouched.
He requested all the other refugee and border communities to come together under one umbrella to fight for their rights.
