JAMMU, April 13: Social activist Jayesh Gupta met Sports Minister Satish Sharma at the Civil Secretariat here today, raising serious concern over the shrinking number of playgrounds in Jammu. In a memorandum submitted to the Minister, Gupta highlighted the trend of converting traditional playfields into recreational parks, limiting children’s access to outdoor sports.
He warned that the lack of open play spaces is negatively impacting children’s physical health and confining them indoors. Gupta stressed that playgrounds are essential not just for recreation but for nurturing sporting talent, with potential to produce athletes who could represent India internationally.
He proposed converting unused or underutilized land into proper playgrounds and urged the Government to act swiftly to reclaim and develop open spaces for public use. “Every medal begins with a playground,” Gupta remarked, appealing for urgent steps to promote a sports culture in Jammu.
