JAMMU, Feb 27: The Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry took up issues of traffic congestion on Jammu roads and parking problems with the new IG Traffic (J&K), Basant Rath here today.
An interactive session in this connection was held at Chamber House, Rail Head complex here today under the chairmanship of JCCI president Rakesh Gupta in which members/ representatives from over three dozen trade organizations participated. On this occasion, the Chamber also submitted a memorandum to the IGP suggesting many measures to improve the traffic system further.
While speaking on the occasion, the IGP (Traffic) indicated that parking in the bazaars may be made as `paid parking’. No `Rehris’ shall be allowed other than `Rehri Zones’. NO encroachments shall be allowed around rotaries, footpaths to be cleared for public and no shopkeepers shall be allowed to cross the shutter level and encroach upon footpaths/ lanes etc. He made mention of footpaths in Bus Stand area , BC Road and near GMC Chowk at Bakshi Nagar.
The Chamber also suggested that some roads in the Old Jammu City may be made one way and also requested that the dropping facility at the Railway Station be free for all.
In the memorandum the JCCI suggested that the loopholes at the ground level which lead to corruption in the traffic department need to be plugged so that the system becomes transparent and corruption free on permanent basis. ” We expect your department to identify the areas which do not have allotted parking spaces and convey the same to the concerned in the government so that the same could be created. Speed limit restrictions should be in writing on the walls and visible to all on all major roads.
“It has been usually observed that the buses and the mini-buses/ matadors do not stop at the designated stops created for them to pick and drop passengers, creating traffic jams, nuisance on the roads, leading to accidents. Restrictions be imposed on such vehicles with heavy fine,” they added.
It was also suggested that functional fare meters be made compulsory in all Auto Rikshaws plying within the Municipal limits of Jammu. There is no check on them and they are charging higher money from the passengers.
CCI also suggested to launch massive awareness drive among people to teach the pedestrians to cross the roads only at Zebra crossings and obey other traffic rules and there should be enough sign boards guiding the drivers, especially outsiders to their destinations at different areas throughout the city.
