SRINAGAR, July 12: With the entry of Rail Coach Factory (RCF) Kapurthala and Uttrakhand Police in the last four stage, the semifinals position has been cleared in the ongoing 14th J&K Police Martyrs Memorial Football Tournament, being organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Police Department at Bakshi Stadium, here.
Now, in the semifinals to be played on July 16 at the same venue, RCF Kapurthala will lock horns with Uttrakhand Police, while J&K Bank will take on Punjab Police to aim for the berth in the finals.
Earlier, in the quarterfinal match played today, J&K Police (A) lost to RCF Kapurthala by three goals to two (3-2) in a close contest. Gurpreet of RCF began the proceedings by netting a superb field goal in the 15th minute of the match to give them a much needed lead. RCF increased the lead when Gopal Thapa scored the second goal in 41st minute, which was followed by yet another goal in the dying moments of the first half in 44th minute by Ajay Kumar. The first half ended with the scoreboard reading (3-0) in favour of RCF. However, JKP-A players dominated in the second half of the game by playing skillfully as a cohesive unit and succeeded in scoring the first goal through Vishal Bharadwaj in 54th minute to decrease the lead by one goal. Then, it was Fayaz Ahmed who netted a splendid goal in the 69th minute. However, this superb display in the second half was not enough to snatch victory. Finally, JKP-A lost by three goals to two (3-2).
The match was officiated by Muzaffar Ahmed, Hilal Ahmed Punjabi, Farooq Ahmed Khan and Farooq Shaheen, while Noor Mohd was match commissioner.
Meanwhile, in another quarterfinal match, Uttrakhand Police drubbed Iqbal Sports by three goals to one (3-1). After the goalless first half, Waseem Hassan of Iqbal Sports scored a magnificent goal via penalty kick in the 49th minute, which was followed by a series of goals notched by the players of Uttrakhand Police. Vir Singh struck twice in 75th and 89th minute, while Shisir Shah netted a goal in 78th minute.
The match was officiated by Rakesh Kumar, Farooq Shah, Hilal Ahmed and Reyaz Ahmed, while Nazir Ahmed was the match commissioner.
Today’s matches among others were witnessed by Alok Puri, IGP Housing Corporation and Ashok Sharma, Staff Officer (SO) ADGP.
